Nassau County licenses home improvement contractors through its Office of Consumer Affairs. Before you sign a contract or pay a deposit, confirm the contractor's license is current.
1. Ask for the license number
Ask the contractor for their Nassau County home improvement license number and the exact business name it is issued under. The number belongs on your written contract.
2. Look it up with the county
- Online: use Nassau County’s license lookup at apex5.nassaucountyny.gov.
- By phone: call Nassau County Consumer Affairs Licensing at (516) 571-2600. The front desk is open 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
3. Check the details
- The business name on the license should match your estimate and contract.
- The license should be current. Nassau’s public search lists businesses with valid licenses.
- If you can’t find the contractor, ask them why before going further.
4. Working in both counties?
Nassau and Suffolk license contractors separately. A contractor based in one county who works in the other should hold the license for the county where your home is. Ask if you aren’t sure.
